# Chats

Chats are how you interact with everything in Resolve. Ask about your telemetry, work with an investigation, kick off a task, or pull from your team knowledge, all in the same conversation. Chats are less a standalone feature and more a foundational building block of Resolve: the gateway to the rest of the system.

A few examples of how chats connect the pieces:

* Start a chat with a question, then create a [task](/tasks) from the answer to run it on a schedule.
* Continue steering that task by picking up the same chat it spawned from.
* Escalate a chat into a [deep investigation](#escalate-to-a-deep-investigation) when a question needs multi-agent, deep-analysis treatment.

## What you can do

* **Vibe-debug your systems.** Ask about telemetry, debug an issue or ticket, or poke around a recent deploy. Follow up in natural language until you have what you need.
* **Run a deep investigation.** Check a few things in chat first, then [escalate](#escalate-to-a-deep-investigation) into a full deep investigation with multi-agent, thorough analysis.
* **Create a task.** Turn a one-off question into a scheduled or event-driven [task](/tasks), for example *"watch #deploys and DM me if error rates spike."*
* **Update your team knowledge.** Add or update Resolve.md, a runbook or doc from the chat so the next chat or investigation benefits from what you just learned.

  **Tip:** every chat comes loaded with [skills](/skills). Look for them by typing `/`.
</Info>

## Where you can chat

* **In the Resolve UI**, from the sidebar or inside any investigation.
* **In Slack or MS Teams**, by @-mentioning Resolve in a connected channel or DM. See [App for Slack](/app-for-slack) or [App for MS Teams (Beta)](/app-for-ms-teams-beta).
* **From your AI assistant**, using ResolveAI's [Plugin](/ai-assistant-plugins) and [MCP](/mcp-integrations) via the `ask` tool.

## Selecting a chat's owner

Every chat has an owner. The owner determines who can edit and contribute to the chat:

* **Me.** Only editable by you. Best for exploration, one-off questions, or work you don't need many contributors on.
* **Organization.** Shareable across the org. Multiple users in your organization can contribute to the chat.

In either case, other users don't see the chat by default unless you share the link with them or the chat is pinned.

## Escalate to a deep investigation

At any time, you can escalate a chat to a deep investigation where a team of agents can do an exploratory analysis. Click **Deep Investigation** in the chat window or type `/rca`, and Resolve takes over to run a deep investigation similar to an [alert investigation](/alert-investigation-modes#investigation).

Use this when you need an agent-driven investigation to look at many different angles and explore your telemetry through multiple steps, rather than a chat-driven follow-up.

This applies to standalone chats. Inside an alert Triage thread, replying to Resolve continues the conversation as a chat instead of escalating. To escalate a Triage, click **Continue Investigation** on the Triage result. See [Alert Investigation Modes](/alert-investigation-modes#faq).

## Rename a chat

Chats are named automatically based on your first message. If the discussion has shifted or you'd prefer a different name, look for the pencil (edit) icon in the sidebar or on the Home page under **Activity**.

## Share a chat

* **Copy the URL** and post it to a colleague, for example in Slack, MS Teams, or a DM.
* **Pin the chat to a team** so members of that team can see it.

## Keep chats within reach

Pinned and starred chats surface on the Home page under **Activity**:

* **Pin a chat to a team.** Pinned chats appear in a separate list and show up for the teams you pin them to.
* **Star a chat** to bookmark it for yourself. Starring is personal; starred chats appear in your own list.
